Small, carefully tended family farms. Bies Village is a small community in the Aceh Province located on the northern end of the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. The village is composed of about 1,000 farmers who look after 1,800 acres of farmland.
Organically grown coffee. Exotic, complex cup. This Sumatra Mandheling from the Burni Bies farm is tended by the Alamsyah family. The coffee is organically grown. On the farm they grow 3 varietals of coffee; Ateng, Bergendal and Jember. The Ateng is an off shoot of the Catimor which is a hybrid of the Caturra and Timor. The Ateng varietal has a good body and acidity with dark red stone fruit notes. The Bergendal was developed in the Aceh Providence from the Typica Varietal. The Bergendal varietal was developed in the Aceh Providence from Typica varietals. The Bergendal Varietal brings sweetness to the coffee. The Jember Varietal originated in Ethiopia and then it made it to India. From India the Dutch took the varietal to Indonesia. The Jember varietal brings complexity to the coffee. All of these varietals work in harmony to produce an exotic, complex cup.
