Many of us wake up with coffee and wind down with wine. We were asked to be a part of the Science & Wine Event on Saturday April 26th, and created a special recipe for the season to enjoy something delicious on a hot sunny day. Have your coffee and wine at the same time, wine not?
Also, Did you know that Coffee and Wine actually have a lot of similarities? Let's explore together at the Science & Wine Event at the Orlando Science Center and now...

CONCEPT OF VARIETY
One of the first similarities between coffee and wine is the concept of it’s variety. Coffee comes in different varieties grown from the coffee belt countries around the world. It could be a green coffee bean that’s from Honduras, Brazil, Guatamala, Costa Rica, and more. It’s about the variety grown as well as it’s ability to be grown in certain soils or environments. Those areas affect the taste and aromatic profiles. The types of soil, sun exposure, and the climatic elements all play a role in defining it’s type. You can define a coffee based on its coffee aroma, coffee flavor, and textures. Think the same as if you were explaining wine. It’s about the smell, the taste and its texture when sipping a full body wine as opposed to a light based on the texture of the way it hits your palate, often described as light, medium or full. Just like wine, coffee has a unique bouquet of aromas and variety in the roasting process. The roasting process affects coffee and mimics the way a winemaker would decide how the cellar would determine the final outcome of a wine. It’s also in the way you prepare to consume the beverage as to where there’s a similarity. In the same way it is important to properly prepare and serve coffee to experience it as its best state, wine is similar.

BOTH ARE MADE WITH FRUIT
Did you know that both coffee and wine are made from fruit? In wine we start from a grape, and in coffee we start with a cherry as seen in the picture below. Both wine and coffee have flavors that are heavily influenced by the soil and climate in which they’re grown. The growth of coffee beans is similar to grapes in that it is a blend of art and science. A coffee farmer knows their fruit trees as well as a vineyard knows their vines, and the decisions each make before, during, and after harvesting their crops has a direct impact on how we experience it later on. The fruit itself affects the flavors, and they both start with a fruit.

THE ROASTING PROCESS
Barnie’s Coffee & Tea Company announced in 2023 the addition of a second coffee roasting production shift at its 12,000-square-foot plant in Orlando. Barnie’s Coffee added the second shift to generate approximately 2,200 bags per day, which doubles the roasted coffee output significantly needed to meet the high demand for our coffees. In 2023 alone, more than 10 million cups of Santa’s White Christmas Coffee were consumed year-round. The total roasted coffee production in 2024 is projected to be more than 500,000 pounds. In addition to their online store, the 45-year-old company offers products on other online platforms such as Amazon and in select grocery stores like Publix and Winn Dixie throughout the Southeast. Barnie’s Coffee & Tea Company has a flagship cafe located in Winter Park, but also operates in collaboration with partnered cafés in the Orlando International Airport Terminal C, the Hitt Library at the University of Central Florida, Stetson University, Rollins College, Seminole County Schools, and the Orlando Science Center.

The roasting process mimics the way winemakers decide how the cellar will affect the final outcome of the wine. How the finished product is served is very similar with the right stemware or right type of coffee mug or milk froth finish. It could also be the right temperature that could affect the way the the tasty beverage shows off.Check out The Coffee Spot at the Orlando Science Center Fueled by Barnie's Coffee. Sip with you soon!
