This time of the year is not only the start of fall and the excitement of the coming holiday season – it is also the yearly salute to America’s favorite beverage: Coffee.
Monday, September 29 is National Coffee Day. This is a holiday in it’s own right (especially for the Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen team!). In my 25-year coffee industry history, I am always thrilled by the excitement generated by this annual event. It’s wonderful to take a day and honor coffee and the many people who contribute to each cup we drink. But I chuckle when I’ve heard people say, “every day is National Coffee Day for me.” Because, as VP of Coffee for Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen, this is the way I live each day!
National Coffee Day began in 1983 – not in America – but in Japan. In fact, we refer to September 29 as a “national” event, but it really is “international.” Around the globe, coffee is the second most traded commodity, just behind petroleum. People in just about every nation enjoy a cup of joe everyday. The latest statistics note that more than 54% of Americans enjoy a cup of coffee each day. Going a step further, the average person has three cups a day. An estimated 587 million cups are consumed daily, supporting a $30 billion industry in the US alone. I’ve heard it said that the world runs on two liquids: coffee and gasoline. Certainly, coffee does fuel our days, provide a wonderful delight to the senses and allows us to enjoy life to its fullest.
National Coffee Day is also a day to promote sustainable coffees and to raise the awareness of conditions in which coffee growers live. Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen is a supporter of Fair Trade Certified and Rain Forest Alliance Certified coffee. On our website you can find these coffees and feel confident that your purchases are supporting a benevolent environment for coffee growers in regions around the world.
I am honored to say that Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen has a longer coffee heritage than National Coffee Day. Our company was founded in 1980 and has been a leader in our country’s evolving affinity and appreciation of specialty coffee and espresso drinks.
This time each year, I make a very special effort to say “Thank You” to coffee drinkers everywhere. We, as a collective group of coffee lovers, have created something extraordinary: a society that discovers comfort, community and camaraderie around a delicious beverage - which all began as a seed.
Thank you lovers of Barnie’s CoffeeKitchen. I invite you to join the celebration on National Coffee Day. We will be offering specials in our cafes and in our online store for National Coffee Day. I’ll give you a sneak peek: in our cafes, enjoy Buy One Get One Free coffee and espresso drinks and online you’ll get a very special shipping offer.
Stay tuned for more information and get ready to join the celebration!
